Like a Roaring Lion – Part 15 Amos 9:11-15 1) Messiah will be king (9:11). o 2 Samuel 7:10, 12-13 – “And I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant them, so that they may dwell in their own place and be disturbed no more. And violent men shall afflict them no more, as formerly . . . When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.” Luke 1:26-27 – “In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. And the virgin’s name was Mary.” This Davidic line is in sorry shape but there will be a restoration concerning this; the Davidic line will be restored to its glory and splendor with the advent or coming a perfect king, who we know to also be a perfect high priest; that is Jesus, the Messiah! Messiah will be king! Messiah will be king. 2) God’s people will be triumphant (9:12). The overthrow of Edom speaks of a total cessation of all opposition to the Kingdom of God. Ephesians 3:6 states “This mystery is that the Gentiles are fellow heirs, members of the same body, and partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel" The idea is not that every nation is righteous or will be made righteous; every nation, however, has inhabitants who can be made righteous; Jews and Gentiles alike. Messiah will be king. God’s people will be triumphant. 3) The curse will be lifted (9:13). • J. A. Motyer notes the following: “If the Messiah is the second David, He is also the second Adam reigning in a restored Eden. We have already noted that this is the idea behind all the passages which speak of the natural bounty of the Messianic kingdom. Amos shares this hope also. The terms of his vision are plain: the earth will yield a lavish and spontaneous abundance. It will be so lavish that the time available will not suffice to gather in either the corn crops or the vintage. In each case the sower of seed for the next crop will find the reaper of the last crop still at work. The abundance will be so lavish that it will seem as if the very mountains and hills are themselves oozing with sweet wine.” • Remember the account of the fall of man in Genesis 3? God says to Adam, “. . . cursed is the ground because of you.” That’s Genesis. In Amos, the curse is gone! Messiah will be king. God’s people will be triumphant. The curse will be lifted. 4) Ultimate hope will be realized (9:14). Amos 5:11b – “. . . but you have built houses of hewn stone, but you shall not dwell in them; you have planted pleasant vineyards, but you shall not drink their wine.” The people “shall rebuild the ruined cities and inhabit them, they shall plant vineyards and drink their win, and they shall make gardens and eat their fruit.” Messiah will be king. God’s people will be triumphant. The curse will be lifted. Ultimate hope will be realized. 5) Salvation will be experienced (9:15).
